. . .After A Soggy Monday, Hot & Drier Weather Today. . .
Climate: The Baton Rouge Metro Airport only received a trace of rain yesterday, but many of you picked up MUCH more! It was SO nice to see the rain, and some areas picked up over an inch! However, I am not expecting much today.
Short Term: It is a warm and muggy start to this Tuesday morning. We have mostly clear skies, but there are some areas of fog this morning, and visibility could drop to around 1/2 mile at times. Temperatures are in the lower to mid 70s.
The very hot weather will continue today, but we will not have the relief from the rain like we did yesterday. A weak cold front helped to set off the storms on Monday, and now that front has gone stationary along the Gulf Coast. This front will keep the best moisture along the coast, and that is where the showers and storms will be today. Inland we will have northwest winds, and they will help to drop the humidity a little. This will cause enough dry air to be in place to limit any storms from developing. Therefore, it will be partly cloudy and very hot with highs in the upper 90s. The Heat Index will be around 105.
Tonight the skies will be mostly clear, and it will be a few degrees cooler with lows in the lower 70s. Some places in southern Mississippi could drop to the upper 60s as the drier air moves in.
Week Ahead & 4th of July weekend: You can expect Wednesday and Thursday to be partly cloudy and still very hot. The chance for rain will be less than 20% those days, so we will stay in the dry weather patten. High temperatures will be in the upper 90s and lows in the mid 70s both days.
Heading into Friday, we will have more moisture returning to the area, and that will help to set
off isolated showers and thunderstorms. These storms will come from daytime heating and the sea breeze. The chance for rain will be around 30%. High temperatures will be down a few degrees as they climb into the mid 90s.
On the 4th of July, we will continue to see moisture returning to the area, and that will keep scattered showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. However, it will not be a washout, but you will need to keep an eye to the sky if you plan on having any outdoor activities. It will remain hot and humid with highs in the lower to mid 90s.
A weak cold front looks to be moving toward Louisiana on Sunday, but it will remain just to the north of us. However, it will be close enough to help set off some scattered thunderstorms. Again, it will not be an all day event, but just the afternoon and evening type storms. Temperatures will be climbing into the lower 90s with lows in the mid 70s.
Tropical Update: All areas of the tropical Atlantic basin are calm, and tropical cyclone development is not expected through Wednesday.
