Weekend Update

Not a bad start to the holiday weekend.  We had a few hit and miss showers and storms on the 4th, but today the wet weather was a little more isolated and tomorrow we can expect more of the same.  A ridge of high pressure in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere will prevent us from seeing widespread showers and storms and storms on Sunday.  Look for that ridge to break down over the next several days, and as it does our rain chances will increase Monday through Wednesday.  During this time highs will hold steady in the lower 90s and lows will hover around the low to mid 70s.

Tropics

On Thursday morning, Tropical Storm Bertha formed way out in the open Atlantic, or about 315 miles WSW of the Cape Verde Islands .  This makes Bertha the earliest storm in history to form that far east!!  Bertha has winds of 50 mph, and some strengthening is forecast over the next 5 days as it moves to the WNW at 20 mph.  The pressure is estimated to be 1000 mb.  The forecast models show Bertha remaining over the open Atlantic through next week.

Elsewhere. . .there are a few tropical waves, but they are not expected to develop into anything.  Therefore, tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.
