Weather Discussion

Short Term Forecast

Once again today we can expect more of the same.  Clouds will start to increase late this morning and showers and thunderstorms will become wide spread this afternoon.  Our weather set up remains unchanged.  High pressure to the east will create southerly winds over the Gulf of Mexico and that is drawing moisture back into South Louisiana .  Meanwhile a series of weak upper level disturbances continue to roll through the Deep South .  This will help trigger storms during the afternoon.  There won’t be any major changes to the weather pattern through Saturday.  While it is unlikely that there will be any severe weather outbreaks, it is possible that there could be a few strong to severe thunderstorms each afternoon between now and then.

Long Term Forecast

There will be a change in the weather pattern on Sunday, but it won’t have a big impact on our forecast.  An upper level trough to the west will be responsible for sending upper level impulses in our direction today through Saturday.  On Sunday that trough will move toward the Great Lakes .  Meanwhile a weak cold front will stall out to the north on Sunday and sit in place before washing out on Wednesday.  This front will act as a lifting mechanism for the warm and humid air moving in from the south.  As a result afternoon showers and thunderstorms will once again remain in the forecast Sunday through Wednesday.  High temperatures will more or less hold steady over the next week and range from the upper 80s to lower 90s.

Lightning Safety Week:  This week, June 22-28th, is Lightning Safety Week!  Always remember this saying, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"  For more very important information in Lightning Safety, click here

Tropics

All areas of the Atlantic tropical basin remain quiet and tropical storm formation is not expected over the next 48 hours.  Let's hope it stays that way!
