Short Term: We will have a nice start to the day with mostly clear skies and muggy temperatures in the lower 70s. Along the coast there are a few showers and thunderstorms, and this is a sign that we will have some inland ones this afternoon. . .
Another unseasonably hot afternoon is expected across the Baton Rouge area. The only relief we will get will be from some isolated showers and thunderstorms that pop-up. These storms will be forming from the sea breeze, and a weak trough of low pressure in the upper-levels of the atmosphere. Some of the storms could be strong with heavy rain, and frequent lightning. High temperatures will be in the lower to mid 90s.
Any storms will end this evening, and then we will have partly cloudy skies. It will be warm and steamy with lows in the lower 70s.
Week Ahead: On Wednesday, that weak trough of low pressure will still be overhead, and that will again help to give us thunderstorms. Except this time, there will be more storms. There is a 40% chance of storms tomorrow, so I will called for a scattering of them. These could also give us heavy rain at times. High temperatures will be in the lower 90s.
On Thursday and Friday, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected once again. Temperatures will be a tad lower because of the rain and partly sunny skies. Therefore, highs will climb to around 90 both days.
Lightning Safety Week: This week, June 22-28th, is Lightning Safety Week! Always remember this saying, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!" For more very important information in Lightning Safety, click here.
Tropical Update: The tropics are still pretty quiet. There are a few tropical waves across the open Atlantic, but they are not expected to develop into anything.
The GFS forecast computer model is now picking up on an area of low pressure developing over the Bay of Campeche this weekend. At this time the shearing looks to be pretty low, and that would be favorable for future development of the system. The model moves the low north toward the western Gulf Coast. IF THIS HAPPENS, it would lead to some pretty wet conditions for us early next week. I'll keep an eye on this to see if it develops. However, only 1 forecast model is picking up on this at this time.
Elsewhere. . .tropical storm formation is not expected through Wednesday.
