A two-car accident on Interstate 10 near Grosse Tete in Iberville Parish killed two people and injured four others, State Police said today.

The accident occurred when a Ford Explorer, westbound on I-10, went out of control and crossed the grass median before careening into the eastbound lanes of traffic, according to a State Police news release.

As the Ford Explorer entered the eastbound lanes, a Chevrolet Tahoe broadsided it on the left side.

The Tahoe was eastbound on the interstate in the left lane when it barreled  into the out-of-control Explorer. The Explorer rolled over and caught fire. Other motorists pulled the driver from the heavily damaged vehicle.

The driver and front seat passenger in the Chevrolet Tahoe were pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.

Three other occupants in the Chevrolet Tahoe were transported to local hospitals with serious injuries. The driver of the Ford Explorer also was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

It is unknown if those killed in the accident were wearing seatbelts.

The identities of the victims will not be released until the next of kin can be notified, State Police said.
