Road cave-in closes Juban Road section

DENHAM SPRINGS — A portion of Juban Road south of Interstate 12 was closed Friday and will remain closed into next week due to a partial road cave-in, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation and Development said Friday.

Mark Lambert said the affected area is approximately 60 feet and is bordered by Johnhenri Road to the north and O’Neal Lane to the south. Both lanes of travel are closed.

Lambert said DOTD engineers believe the road is sinking because of the failure of two 96-inch metal drainage pipes. The problem was first reported Friday and the road already has an 18-inch dip, Lambert said.

“The metal obviously has deteriorated to the point it can no longer support the weight of the road,” Lambert said.

Local traffic will be allowed on Juban Road to Johnhenri Road, Lambert said. Anyone needing to travel south of Johnhenri Road will have to take either La. 16 or La. 447, he said.

Barricades were set up at the site Friday, but people have been ignoring them, Lambert said.

“It’s a real hazard for people to drive down it,” Lambert said, citing the presence of gas lines underneath the road.
