Sylvia Weatherspoon is the co-anchor of WBRZ News 2 Louisiana at 5, 6, &10p.m. She began her career at WBRZ in December 1993.
Sylvia joined the WBRZ team after working as the news director for WJBO-AM & WFMF-FM radio in Baton Rouge. She initially pursued a career in radio news reporting, but the technical side of TV news caught her attention. She spent her spare time in the newsroom of a local TV station. Sylvia said television news felt natural to her, and she loved it! She found TV news challenging, allowing her to be creative in her reporting.
Sylvia attended Louisiana State University and studied broadcast journalism. She serves on the executive boards of the Paula G. Manship YMCA, LSU Hilltop Arboretum, Greater Baton Rouge Community Clinic and Center of Hope. She also serves on the advisory boards of YWCA Encore Plus, Junior League of Baton Rouge and Woman’s Hospital. She is a member of Sunrise Rotary of Baton Rouge and volunteers as a narrator for Louisiana Voices, as well as emceeing for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women, Big Buddy’s Dancing with the Stars Baton Rouge, and many more.
Sylvia has received numerous awards over the years. Most recently she won the 2007 Louisiana State Medical Society Award of Excellence in Medical Reporting for her series “Reduce Your Risk”, the 2007 Laurie Smith Anderson Louisiana Arthritis Association Excellence in Healthcare Reporting and the 2007 Women In Media for television. In 1995, she won the Louisiana Associated Press award for 2nd place Best Spot News on her story of a house fire, “In Just Minutes,” and 3rd place for “Miracle on the Mississippi,” a report covering an accident on the Mississippi River Bridge.
Sylvia resides in Baton Rouge with her husband and two children. In her spare time she enjoys vacationing with her family, gardening, and Bible study.
