Prairie View is cruising along, a mere three weeks away from a berth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Game.
Southern, fresh off of a hard-earned win, has perhaps regained its rhythm as it heads into an open date.
Texas Southern delivered a cannon shot with a 51-21 win over Alcorn State.
Then there’s Grambling.
After struggling on defense early this season and losing a pivotal shootout to Prairie View, the Tigers have quietly found their groove.
Just ask poor Willie Totten, whose Mississippi Valley State team made three goal-line stands against Grambling last week.
The Delta Devils still lost 50-7.
“In the first half, we held Grambling to about 155 yards of total offense, and they only really scored one touchdown. The other (score) was a field goal,” Totten said, noting some of his team’s few positives.
The halftime score was 22-0. It only got worse from there.
Last weekend’s victory was yet another sign that when the Tigers lace ’em up for the Bayou Classic later this month, they will likely be a tough out for Southern.
“Overall, we’re proud of our team and the way they’ve played,” said coach Rod Broadway, whose team faces Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 4 p.m. Saturday in Little Rock, Ark., for the Delta Literacy Classic.
“Hopefully we can get ready to play well this weekend.”
Grambling still needs help to win the West; the Tigers must win out and hope Prairie View loses twice.
