Longtime Southern coach Pete Richardson achieved another milestone with Saturday night’s 15-0 victory over Alabama State.
He didn’t even realize it. In fact, he didn’t seem to care about it, either.
With the win, the Jaguars improved to 6-4 overall with one game left in the regular season. SU would need to beat Grambling to have a chance at another game — namely, the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game.
Either way, Richardson is assured of a winning record for the 13th time in his 16-year stint at Southern. He also had five straight winning seasons at Winston-Salem State from 1988-92, giving him 18 winning records in 21 years.
His three blemishes: a 6-6 record in 2002; a 4-5 record in 2005; and a 5-6 record in 2006.
Overall, Richardson is 170-70-1 as a head coach, good for a .707 winning percentage. At Southern, he is 128-56 (.696).
“I don’t really get into figures,” he said. “I get into how we perform on the field.”
Green field, white pants
Southern was decked out in white pants Saturday night for the first time this season.
The Jaguars have sets of blue, gold and white pants but rarely wear the latter.
Equipment manager Derek Price said the team chose white pants because the grass at Ladd-Peebles Stadium is artificial, so it wouldn’t leave as many stains on the SU uniforms.
The Jaguars’ last game in white pants was last season’s Bayou Classic — also on artificial grass, inside the Superdome.
