PVU whips Alcorn, clinches SWAC West

LORMAN, Miss. — Prairie View A&M clinched its first Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division title with a 34-14 victory over Alcorn State on Saturday as K.J. Black threw for three touchdowns.

Black completed 24 of 30 passes for 213 yards for the Panthers (7-1, 6-0 SWAC), who will face the Eastern Division champion Dec. 12 in Birmingham, Ala.

After Prairie View led 21-0 at halftime, Antonio DeJarbett recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown to pull the Braves (2-6, 2-4) within two touchdowns with 8:46 left in the third quarter.

Prairie View responded with a 5-yard touchdown run by Donald Babers, who rushed for 134 yards on 26 carries.

ALABAMA A&M 13, JACKSON STATE 5: Deaunte Mason rushed for a touchdown and passed for another to lead Alabama A&M over Jackson State in Huntsville, Ala.

Mason was 13-for-24 for 128 yards with two interceptions. He connected with Thomas Harris on a 20-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter as the Bulldogs (6-4, 3-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) took a 6-5 lead. In the fourth quarter, Mason scored on a 5-yard run for a 13-5 lead.

The Bulldogs kept the Tigers (3-6, 3-3) without an offensive touchdown, allowing only a field goal and a safety. The Tigers managed only 200 total yards.

MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 16, LINCOLN, MO., 6: Paul Roberts and Anthony Bowie threw touchdown passes as Mississippi Valley State (3-7) beat Lincoln of Missouri (0-10) in a nonconference game in Itta Bena, Miss.

Roberts went 9-for-16 for 121 yards, and Bowie was 10-for-19 for 169 yards.

With the score tied 6-6, Carlos Sanchez kicked a 29-yard field goal with 1:22 remaining in the third quarter as the Delta Devils (3-7) took a 9-6 lead. In the fourth quarter, Bowie hit William Christopher for a 10-yard touchdown pass to put the game out of reach.

Stephen Robert led Valley’s ground game with 11 carries for 44 yards.

Lincoln (0-10) was held to 183 yards total offense, including 96 yards rushing on 34 carries. The Blue Tigers were led by Jerrell Anderson, who caught three passes for 80 yards. The Blue Tigers, an NAIA team, are 1-18 over the past two seasons.
