ITTA BENA, MISS. — Jackson State continued its roll by ending Southern’s late-season surge Thursday on the opening day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.

Lisa Wren and Niara Crimiel each scored as Jackson State (8-5-2), the top seed from the Eastern Division, ousted Southern 2-0.

Jackson State, which is last lost on Sept. 13 and is 8-0-2 since an 0-5 start, will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the Western Division’s No. 2 seed, in a semifinal at 6 p.m. today.

Grambling (11-6-1), the top seed from the Western Division, plays Prairie View (8-9), the No. 3 seed from the Western Division, at 3:30 p.m. today.

Crimiel’s goal came in the first half off a Shahamin Nunes assist at the 14:33 minute mark. Wren scored an unassisted goal in the second half while goalkeeper Allison Lane recorded five saves and her third shutout of the season.

Southern (4-15), the No. 4 seed from the Western Division, had won three of its final four regular-season matches.

GRAMBLING 11, ALCORN STATE 0: Marquise Givens scored three goals and Anita Dominique and Lynsey Carrier two apiece to lead Grambling in a rout.

Alcorn (1-15) managed just two shots as Grambling goalkeeper Cherie Silas pitched her seventh shutout of the season.

ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 7, ALABAMA A&M 3: Nicole Parks-Powell scored a pair of second-half goals — including the go-ahead score at the 49:25 mark — as UAPB (10-6-4) overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit with a scoring flurry early in the second half.

After Erika Forbes tied the game at 1-1 at the 48:23 mark, Parks-Powell scored what proved to be the game-winner, and Jade West, who had four assists, scored at the 51:19 mark.

Brittany Joseph scored twice and Celeste Roberts once for Alabama A&M (2-15), which led 1-0 and 2-1.

PRAIRIE VIEW 3, MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 0: Navy Diaz, Yosselyn Aguilar and Brenda Castillo each scored as Prairie View beat Valley (4-10-2), the defending champion and host.
