Dillon, Grambling unload on Valley

GRAMBLING — Greg Dillon threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more scores as Grambling State routed Mississippi Valley State 50-7 on Saturday.

Dillon rushed 24 times for 96 yards and was 17-for-25 for 141 yards with one interception. He threw scoring passes of 9 yards to Van Phillips and 3 yards to Larry Donnelland ran for touchdowns of 20 and 9 yards.

Ari Johnson kicked field goals of 22, 33 and 17 yards in the first half for Grambling (5-3, 4-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) to help the Tigers take a 22-0 halftime lead.

Trailing 36-0, Mississippi Valley State quarterback Eddie Ivery Jr. threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Chris Williams with 13:52 left in the game. Ivery was 4-for-10 for 98 yards.

The Tigers rolled up 446 yards of total offense compared to 145 for the Delta Devils (2-6, 1-5). Grambling had 24 first downs; Mississippi Valley six.

TEXAS SOUTHERN 51, ALCORN STATE 21: Arvell Nelson threw for three touchdowns and ran for another score in Texas Southern’s dominant win over Alcorn State in Houston.

The game was tied at 21 going into the last quarter, but Nelson’s scoring run and two of his touchdown throws helped Texas Southern (3-4, 2-1 SWAC) score 30 straight points. Nelson went 19-for-33 for 193 yards overall.

Running back Randall Newsome carried for two touchdowns, and Martin Gilbert ran for one. Defensive lineman John Cole scored a safety.

Tim Buckley, quarterback for Alcorn State (2-5, 2-3), threw for two touchdowns and 186 yards, but he also had four interceptions. Running back Arnold Walker ran for the team’s only other score.

ALABAMA A&M 21, ALABAMA STATE 7: Deaunte Mason threw a pair of touchdown passes to Thomas Harris to lead Alabama A&M over Alabama State in Birmingham, Ala.

Mason was 21-for-32 with 273 yards, two touchdowns passes and an interception for the Bulldogs (5-3, 2-2 SWAC). He also rushed for 49 yards on eight carries. Harris finished with seven catches for 157 yards and two scores.

Anthony Speight was 10-for-24 with 99 yards, one touchdown and an interception for the Hornets (4-4, 1-4). He rushed for 40 yards on 14 carries.
