Lee closes on school record

PINE BLUFF, Ark. — Southern quarterback Bryant Lee threw for 214 yards Saturday, perhaps moving him to within one or two plays of becoming the Jaguars’ all-time leading passer.

Lee now has 7,270 career passing yards, 17 yards shy of breaking the record held by Eric Randall, who threw for 7,286 yards from 1992-95.

Long catch for Hollimon

Running back Gary Hollimon had already made plenty big plays for SU this season, but Saturday’s game marked the first time he scored on a TD pass.

In the first quarter, Hollimon ran a simple wheel route, caught the pass from Lee and found himself all alone. He outraced everyone to the goal line on a play that covered 70 yards — Southern’s longest play from scrimmage all year.

“We’ve been running that play, but the defense was paying all the attention to Stew (wideout Juamorris Stewart). They had a linebacker who was supposed to cover me, but nobody covered me. I was just open,” Hollimon said. “When I catch it and I see nothing but green grass, I’m trying to get to it (end zone) as fast as I can.”

Hollimon also has a team-high five rushing touchdowns.

First FG for Duran

Josh Duran’s 33-yard field goal in the second quarter was his first successful attempt this season, breaking a cold spell virtually no one could explain.

Duran was 10-for-13 on field-goal attempts last season but started this year in an 0-for-5 slump — including a miss from 34 yards away in the fourth quarter of SU’s previous game, a 16-14 loss to Prairie View.

“We had to get his confidence up because he’s a good kicker,” SU coach Pete Richardson said. “I think we just have to get the execution part of it down. Anytime you can do that, I think he’ll be OK.”

Another pick for House

Heading into this weekend, Jason House and UAPB safety Kevin Thornton were tied for the national lead with six interceptions. Saturday, House pulled ahead.
