Laneisha Stephens, a 6-foot-2 center from Donaldsonville High School, will sign a letter of intent to play for the Southern women’s basketball team, she and her high school coach confirmed.

Stephens, nicknamed “Slim,” helped lead her team finish as the Class 2A state runner-up to John Curtis last spring and was named to The Advocate’s All-Metro team.

“She has tremendous offensive potential,” said Welmon (Butch) Little, her coach at Donaldsonville. “Her offense is coming around, but she was really slowed down by hurting her ACL. She tore it in May. But if you’re looking for a defensive enforcer, she’s it. She’s got that.”

Stephens received interest from Louisiana-Monroe, Southern Mississippi and Nicholls State, she said, but she only took one campus visit. She chose SU.

“It was a hard decision, but it was a good one,” Stephens said. “I can stay close to home, to my family and friends. ... As far as what kind of player I am, I’m a good shot-blocker and rebounder. I might be skinny, but I play hard.”

Today is the first day of the early signing period for basketball recruits.
