PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — A day after clinching the Western Division title, Southern’s baseball team solidified that feat by scoring a 15-6 win over Prairie View.

Starter Sherrard Brooks (6-1) struck out eight in six innings and improved to 4-0 in divisional play since joining the weekend rotation.

“You have to like the fact we weren’t just satisfied with clinching (with a doubleheader sweep Saturday),” Southern coach Roger Cador said. “We wanted to play well, and we did that.”

For the third straight game, the Jaguars (26-15, 18-6 Western Division) had an early offensive onslaught.

This time, SU had an eight-run second inning and added four more runs in the third to lead 12-0.

Juan Mujica’s three run home run, his first homer of the year, ignited the first-inning onslaught. And DeMario Ellis continued the barrage with a two-out, two-run shot, his second homer of the year.

Ellis, the No. 9 hitter, went 4-for-5, with three runs and two RBIs. Brad McDavid was 3-for-6, with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs — smacking a two-RBI double to center that followed Ellis’ homer in the second inning.

Frazier Hall was 2-for-4, with three runs and three RBIs. His two-out, two-run homer to right giving Southern a 12-0 lead in the third inning.

Plus, Calvin Anderson was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs.

Prairie View (21-24, 14-10), the two-time, defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champion, was led by Wilford White, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases.

PV, as the No. 3 seed from the division, will be in the same four-team bracket with Southern when the SWAC tournament begins May 14 at SU’s Lee-Hines Field. The teams have met for the SWAC title in two of the last three seasons.

The tournament will have two double-elimination brackets, with the winner of each bracket playing a single, winner-take-all championship game on May 18 on ESPNU.

“It’s hard to sweep these guys,” Cador said. “And we’re going to see them in the tournament, maybe as early as the second day.”
