Darren Coates scored a rushing touchdown and caught a touchdown pass as Southern defeated Grambling, 22-13, in the 34th Bayou Classic on Saturday afternoon in the Superdome. It was the first Bayou Classic since the death in April of former Grambling coach Eddie Robinson, one of the central figures in the Classic's creation.

The first play and the last play of the game helped doom Southern to a 23-21 loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Jaguars overcame a 13-0 first-quarter deficit, but a bizarre finish left Southern with an unexpected defeat.

Southern was strong up the middle in a 56-7 rout of Texas Southern at Reliant Stadium in Houston. The Jaguars scored 27 points in the second quarter and 20 in the third in routing the winless Tigers.

Southern needed a last-minute defensive stop to hold off Alcorn State, 14-10, at A.W. Mumford Stadium. Jaguar safety Jarmaul George deflected a pass in the end zone on fourth-and-6 with 20.2 seconds to go as Southern ended a two-game losing streak.

Jackson State added insult to injury in a 32-26 victory against Southern at A.W. Mumford Stadium. The Jaguars suffered four injuries to significant players as they lost their second consecutive game.

Southern's habit of falling behind early finally caught to the Jaguars in a 33-28 loss to Alabama A&M at A.W. Mumford Stadium. Southern suffered its first loss after five victories and fell into second place in the SWAC West at 3-1, one game behind Grambling.

Southern's defense led the way again as the Jaguars stayed perfect with a 21-2 victory against Alabama State in Mobile. The Jaguars improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the SWAC.

The Jaguars rallied from a 21-point deficit to claim a 41-34 victory against the Tigers and stay unbeaten. In all, Southern's defense forced five turnovers in the second half while Lee threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns in the victory.

The Jaguars defense was the main reason Southern improved to 3-0 with a 12-2 victory against the Panthers at A.W. Mumford Stadium. The Jaguars came up with three interceptions and held the PVU to 197 total yards of offense as the Jaguars came away victorious in their home opener. In fact, the defense pitched a shutout as PVU's only two points came on a penalty.

The Jaguars claimed a 24-6 victory against in the Chicago Football Classic. Southern took control of a scoreless game in the second quarter as quarterback Bryant Lee threw two touchdown passes.

The 15th season under head coach Pete Richardson opened with the Jaguars taking a 33-27 victory in MEAC/SWAC Challenge at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala. Southern overcame an eight-point halftime deficit and took control of the game early in the fourth quarter on Darren Coates' one-yard touchdown run.
