Saints sign two rookies to deals
METAIRIE — The New Orleans Saints agreed to contract terms with two more of their 2008 draft choices Friday, reaching deals with place-kicker Taylor Mehlhaff and wide receiver Adrian Arrington.
Mehlhaff, the Saints’ sixth-round pick this spring, and Arrington, who was chosen in the seventh round, both agreed to three-year deals. They followed defensive tackle DeMario Pressley, one of two fifth-round selections who signed Tuesday.
Mehlhaff, who connected on 50 of 65 career field-goal attempts at Wisconsin, will challenge veteran Martin Gramatica for the kicking job in training camp.
The left-footer was a first-team All-American selection by the American Football Coaches Association as a senior in 2007 in addition to earning All-Big Ten honors.
Arrington was the 237th overall pick of the draft out of Michigan. The 6-foot-3, 192-pounder caught 109 passes for 1,438 yards and 16 touchdowns in his college career. As a junior last season, he caught 67 passes for 882 yards and had eight TDs.
The Saints have just three more draft picks to agree to terms with before players report to training camp in Jackson, Miss., on Wednesday. They are defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis (first round), cornerback Tracy Porter (second round) and guard/tackle Carl Nicks (fifth round).
The Saints also waived three players — cornerback Anwar Phillips, quarterback Travis Lulay and defensive end Jeremy Geathers.
