Dorsey 5th; Saints take Ellis, Porter
NEW YORK -- Former LSU star Glenn Dorsey was taken by the Kansas City Chiefs with the fifth overall pick today of the NFL draft.
Meanwhile, the Saints traded up to No. 7 to select USC defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis and took Indiana cornerback Tracy Porter (5-11, 188) in the second round.
The Chicago Bears' draft has a Louisiana flavor with their first two picks. The Bears took Vanderbilt offensive tackle and former Catholic standout Chris Williams at No. 14. In round two, Chicago grabbed Tulane running back Matt Forte.
Dorsey waited as St. Louis grabbed Virginia defensive end Chris Long at No. 2. Atlanta followed at No. 3 with the selection of Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, and Oakland went with Arkansas running back Darren McFadden at No. 4.
The Chiefs drafted an LSU player in the first round for the second consecutive season. Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe saw significant playing time in Kansas City last season after he was taken with the 23rd overall pick in 2007.
The deal that allowed New Orleans to take Ellis at No. 7 involved the Saints giving up their first-round pick (No. 10 overall) and a third-round pick to New England. The Saints also acquired the Patriots' fifth-round selection, giving New Orleans two fifth-round picks. But barring another trade, the Saints do not have another pick until the fifth round and are done drafting for today.
The Patriots used the No. 10 overall pick to take Tennessee linebacker Jerod Mayo.
Four SEC players were drafted in the top 10 for the fourth time in draft history and the second time in four seasons. In all, the SEC accounted for eight of the 31 first-round picks.
