METAIRIE — Saints guard Tim Duckworth apparently doesn’t drive as hard a bargain as the agent for holdout draft choice Malcolm Jenkins.
Duckworth and defensive tackle Rod Coleman completed a long-discussed swap of jersey numbers Wednesday morning as Duckworth switched to 72 and Coleman switched to 75.
Coleman instigated the negotiations, which began during offseason workouts. “Seventy-five is my number,” said Coleman, who wore that number when he was with the Falcons and was eager to get the deal done in time to wear it in the preseason opener against the Bengals on Aug. 14 in the Superdome.
Duckworth’s compensation will be a Philly cheesesteak when the team travels to Philadelphia to play the Eagles in September.
“I was just being a nice guy,” said Duckworth, who returned to the number he wore while on the Eagles’ practice squad. “I don’t care about it. The number doesn’t make me. I make the number.”
Duckworth was asked if the sandwich was all he got in return. “I got a thank you,” he replied.
Moore progressing
WR Lance Moore, who’s coming back from offseason surgery on his shoulder, said he hopes to be able to play in the second preseason game, Aug. 22 at Houston. He said he expects to be held out of the first game even though he’s getting close to 100 percent.
Moore has been wearing a red jersey in team drills as a sign he’s off limits to any contact. Coach Sean Payton said the jersey might come off after Saturday’s scrimmage.
