Two Baton Rouge teams, St. Joseph’s Academy and Episcopal, grabbed No. 1 rankings in the latest statewide high school cross country polls released by the Louisiana Track & Field Coaches Association.

SJA was ranked No. 1 in the first girls poll two weeks ago that ranked teams in all classes together. This time around the Class 5A Redstickers, winners of every meet they’ve competed in this season, got the top spot in the girls poll for teams in Classes 5A to 3A. SJA received all 10 first-place votes.

Lafayette and St. Scholastica are next in the large schools girls poll, which also includes St. Michael at No. 7.

Meanwhile, the Episcopal boys squad is No. 1 in the small schools boys poll for teams in Classes 2A and below, just ahead of No. 2 University High.

Like SJA, Episcopal got all 10 first-place votes.

Hammond’s St. Thomas Aquinas, No. 1 in the small schools girls poll, also garnering all 10 first-place votes. Episcopal is rated second behind STA with McGehee of New Orleans at No. 3.

Brother Martin winner of last weekend’s Catholic High Invitational based on a sixth-runner tie-breaker, is No. 1 in the large schools boys poll.

The Crusaders received four first-place votes. Catholic High is second in the poll for teams in Classes 5A and 4A and got one first-place vote.

Another local team, Walker, received five first-place votes, but is ranked fourth. Two weeks ago, Walker was ranked No. 1 in the first overall poll. The St. Michael boys are fifth in the large schools poll.
