Simon commits to Central Fla.
Although the final decision had an earlier-than-expected arrival date, Glen Oak’s Deon Simon was pleased with the results.
Instead of waiting until the end of his senior year to make his collegiate choice public, Simon, a defensive tackle, removed the suspense Friday when the 6-foot-4, 280-pounder committed to the University of Central Florida.
“I just decided to do it so I could focus on my last year,” Simon said. “It wasn’t when I planned but this will take some of the stress off.
“I still might get some calls but I won’t have to deal with some of the pressure now that I’ve committed. This should slow down the pace.”
Simon, rated No. 78 at his position nationally by Rivals.com, chose Central Florida over scholarship offers from Kentucky, Southern Mississippi and Colorado.
He became the 13th commitment for the Golden Knights and second defensive lineman, joining Tay Irvin of LaGrange, Ga.
Simon, who was recruited by David Kelley, a former LSU assistant, also continues a recent trend of Baton Rouge-area prospects headed to UCF.
The Knights currently have former Redemptorist standouts Johnell Neal and Reggie Weams on their roster along with Khymest Williams of Lutcher.
“They’ve told me that I could possibly come in and get some early playing time,” said Simon, who needs a point on his ACT to become academically qualified. “That’s one of the things that grabbed my attention.”
That’s been a way of life for Simon since he stepped into Glen Oaks’ starting lineup as a freshman. During his career he’s played fullback and tight end and both end and tackle on defense.
Simon earned first-team All-District 6-4A honors at defensive tackle in 2007 with 70 tackles and 10 sacks.
“I just like their program,” said Simon, who made an unofficial visit to the Orlando campus earlier this summer. “I liked the coaching staff and the players. I just liked everything about them.”
Notes
Tulane picked up its seventh commitment from running back Stephen Barnett (5-11, 180) of The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla., Barnett, who rushed for 1,208 yards and 15 TDs, picked the Green Wave over scholarship offers from East Carolina and Navy. … The East St. John duo of Bryson James, a 6-2, 205-pound linebacker, and Romelle Jones, a 6-foot, 270-pound defensive tackle, committed to South Alabama, which will play its inaugural season in 2009.
