Star of Stars Athlete of Year banquet tonight

Capital City Press and The Advocate will host its 23rd Star of Stars Athlete of the Year awards banquet tonight at Ashley Manor.

Festivities will begin at 6:45 p.m. as The Advocate sports staff honors 23 Star of Stars in 14 sports while also naming two Athlete of the Year winners.

Current LSU football-baseball player Chad Jones of Southern Lab was the Boys Athlete of the Year last spring. Teagra Clifton of Capitol Pre-College Academy for Girls, who is set to play basketball at Southern University in 2008-09 was the Girls Athlete of the Year winner a year ago.

The boys finalists are Ryan Lewis of Catholic High, Ryan Thibodeaux of The Dunham School and Zack Von Rosenberg of Zachary High. Kelli Jenkins of Plaquemine High, Leigh Myers of the Dunham School and Jasmine Scott of St. Michael the Archangel are the girls finalists.

Past winners of the award include Texas A&M quarterback Bucky Richardson of Broadmoor (1986), Olympic volleyball player Danielle Scott of Woodlawn (1990) and a host of future NFL football players, including Jimmy Williams of Episcopal (1996), Michael Clayton of Christian Life (2000) and Marcus Spears of Southern Lab (2001).

Glen Davis of University High, honored as the boys winner in 2004, is part of the Boston Celtics team that just advanced to the NBA Eastern Conference finals.

WNBA All-Star Seimone Augustus of Capitol (2002) is among the past girls winners.

Along with the Athlete of the Year winners, The Advocate sports staff also honors the Star of Stars in the sports of football, volleyball, cross country, swimming, wrestling, soccer, basketball, bowling, baseball, softball, gymnastics, tennis, golf and track.
