Capitol (11-1) advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in coach Chadwick Germany’s four-year tenure. Newman finished 9-3.

Jackson scored on runs of 62, 14, 43 and 31 yards and pushed his season total of touchdowns to 28. Jackson eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark in the second half and has 2,095 on the season and more than 600 yards rushing in two playoff games. Jackson had three receptions for 69 yards.

The Lions finished with 456 yards rushing on 44 carries. The Lions also can pass. Senior quarterback Terrance Broadway threw just one pass in the first half and finished with 160 yards passing. He completed 7 of 13 passes, including a 66-yard scoring toss to Roosevelt Wright that started a 27-point scoring explosion by the Lions in the fourth quarter.

Following a 40-yard kickoff return, Newman scored on its first play. Quarterback Ryan Brenner passed 33 yards to tight end Merritt Talbot as Newman trailed only 28-21 with 10:03 remaining in the game. Brenner completed 22 of 38 passes for 256 yards in the game.

Capitol roared back with three TDs over the next eight minutes. First, Jackson carried the ball six times as the Lions drove 77 yards in seven plays. Then, Nicholas Crittney scored on a 1-yard run to cap a three-play, 22-yard drive. Finally, Jackson capped a 46-yard drive with his 31-yard score.

Capitol’s defense came up big in the fourth quarter. Brandon Lucas had a fourth-down tackle for an 8-yard loss and the Lions prevailed in two other fourth-down situations.

Newman recovered an onside kick in the fourth quarter, but didn’t score on the possession.

On Newman’s second drive of the game, the Greenies drove 85 yards to the Capitol 9. The Lions defense stiffened as Travis Dunn had a sack for an 8-yard loss on second down. Lineman Kedric Parker deflected a pass and Jarvis Jack blocked a 33-yard field-goal try by Newman’s Richard Brennan with 1:05 remaining in the first quarter.
