The Catholic High Bears and the St. Joseph’s Academy Red Stickers were unstoppable Sunday on the final day of the Capital City Swim League Championships at the LSU Natatorium, winning the boys and girls titles by more than 100 points each.

The Bears scored 414 points to comfortably beat second-place Baton Rouge High (302) and third-place Lutcher (259.17).

“We had a good finals, but I thought we were better in the prelims,” Catholic coach Doug Logdson said. “Twenty-six of our 30 swimmers had their best times. You can’t set yourself up to swim fast at the finals unless you swim well in the prelims.”

St. Joseph’s picked up 427.5 points to cruise past University High (309.5) and Episcopal (214).

“We swam great,” St. Joseph’s co-coach Lyle Robelot said. “We had our veterans come out and swim great, and our newcomers were lights out.”

Catholic got the day started on a high note, winning the opening race, the boys 200-yard medley relay, over University High and Parkview Baptist in a time of 1 minute, 43.06 seconds.

St. Joseph’s picked up a second-place finish in the girls 200 medley relay, touching the wall in 1:58.15, four seconds behind University High’s 1:54.60 pace.

The first city record to fall came in the boys 200 individual medley when Parkview’s John Michael Moore touched the wall in 1:53.64, well ahead of Catholic’s Grant Grenfell and Dutchtown’s Charles Doofe.

Moore also won the 100 butterfly in 52.00, beating University High’s Clay Furr by 2.3 seconds.

A second city-meet record fell in the boys 50 freestyle when Episcopal’s Austin Butler won in 21.20, beating Caleb Champagne of Zachary and Sean King of Baton Rouge High. Butler later won the 100 freestyle in 47.08.

Kathryn Miles helped lead University High, competing on the victorious 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams, and winning the 500 freestyle and the 200 individual medley. Teammate Ayuko Morikawa won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.74.

Joanne Chien of Baton Rouge High and Jarrod Brown of Redemptorist were the other double winners in the meet.

Brown won the 200 (1:48.78) and 500 (4:56.99) freestyles.
