Chien, Butler, Moore shine in prelims

Three swimmers swam top times in two individual events during the Capital City Swim League Championships preliminaries held Saturday.
Joanne Chien of Baton Rouge High, Austin Butler of Episcopal and John Michael Moore of Parkview Baptist posted the top marks in their respective events during two sessions held at the Crawfish Aquatics pool.
The two-day meet concludes today with consolation finals and finals at the LSU Natatorium starting at 1 p.m.
Relay events and the top
heat of competitors in both the girls and boys 500-yard freestyle events won’t swim until today.
Chien was the only girls double winner in the morning session. She had times of 24.59 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 1 minute, 0.51 seconds in the 100 backstroke.
In the afternoon, Butler swept the boys sprint events, winning the 50 freestyle (21.89) and the 100 freestyle (48.97). Moore placed first in the boys 200 individual medley (1:57.67) and the 100 butterfly (53.52).
Cameron Balkom was the lone first-place finisher for defending girls champion St. Joseph’s Academy. Balkom edged Hollie Steffenson of Brusly to win the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.34.
Defending boys champion Catholic High had no first-place finishers in the prelims. The Bears’ Grant Grenfell (200 IM), Colin Finnegan (100 breaststroke) and Andrew Layman (200 freestyle) were second-place finishers.
CCSL Championships
The top individual finishers from Saturday’s preliminary heats of the Capital City Swim League Championship held at the Crawfish Aquatics pool. Finals are scheduled today at 1 p.m. at the LSU Natatorium.
