Cross country teams in the Baton Rouge area end their regular season with the annual Metro Meet set to begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday at BREC’s Highland Road Park.

Schools located in the metro Baton Rouge area are the only ones allowed to compete in the meet that is a final tuneup for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s State Cross Country Meet scheduled for Nov. 16-17 in Natchitoches.

Races begin at 3 p.m. with the three-mile girls varsity race. The three-mile boys varsity races follow at 3:30 p.m. A combined two-mile boys and girls race for junior high competitors in grades eight- and-under caps the action at 4 p.m.

Mira, Woods SEC bound

Two athletes who have excelled in different spring sports, Lauren Mira of St. Joseph’s Academy and Gabe Woods of Albany, have committed to Southeastern Conference schools and will sign during the NCAA’s early signing period that begins this week.

Mira, a tennis player, has committed to Vanderbilt, while Woods, a top baseball prospect, has committed to Ole Miss.

The three-time defending Division I-Class 5A state champion, Mira has a 44-0 singles record during her high school career, including a 14-0 mark last year. She also had scholarship offers from LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Alabama.

Woods, a standout for the Louisiana Elite 17s in the summer, was also recruited by several SEC schools, as well as Southland and Conference USA schools.

“Ole Miss had been my choice since I was 14, when I was able to play on their field and experience that atmosphere,” Woods said. “I also developed the best relationship with the Ole Miss coaches, and I just knew it was the best fit.”

Fame game changes

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association and the Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame have revamped the format for the annual Hall of Fame Basketball Classics held each spring.

Instead of allowing schools to host games, the Hall of Fame Classics will be held at seven different sites this winter. The goal will be to showcase the best match-ups possible for each date and site.

Northwestern State in Natchitoches and Sulphur will host games on Jan. 9, while Nicholls State and Shreveport’s Centenary College will be the sites on Jan. 16. On Jan. 30, LSU’s Pete Maravich Assembly Center and the Alario Center in Marrero will be the host sites. The list of games will conclude Feb. 6 with games at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
