Woodlawn High School running back Demarcaze Givens ran for four touchdowns in a 55-14 win over Istrouma to give the Panthers a share of the District 7-4A title with Glen Oaks.
Woodlawn coach Don Jones said he believed the district title was the school’s first in football since earlier this decade.
Woodlawn (7-3, 5-1 in 7-4A) closed the regular season by winning five games in a row.
“We’re really happy with the way we finished,” Jones said. “We’re really feeling good about ourselves with the way we’re playing right now. … It’s just a great way to finish up a year.”
The playoffs are next for Woodlawn.
“We’re looking forward to whomever we draw,” Jones said.
Givens had 101 yards on 13 carries, getting all of his scores in the first half as Woodlawn took a 48-8 halftime lead.
“Our main goal was to get on them quick, not let them hang around and get any momentum,” Jones said. “That’s exactly what we did.”
In Woodlawn’s 27-point first quarter, Givens had touchdown runs of 1, 7 and 8 yards and Charles McKee returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown.
Woodlawn got 21 more points in the second quarter: on Rashad Turner’s 41-yard catch from Kendall Barnes, Givens’ 15-yard run and Jarman Clark’s 7-yard run. Clark had 73 yards on 11 carries.
Carey Ford added a 38-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Istrouma (3-7, 3-4) had two touchdowns: a Chad Williams pass from Corey Williams in the first quarter and a Kenneth Bell run in the fourth quarter.
“We really executed well,” Jones said. “We were pretty balanced once again. You have to feel pretty good about that.”
