St. Thomas More takes district crown

LAFAYETTE — Mathew Flores scored on an 11-yard run and Don Olivier kicked a pair of field goals as St. Thomas More won the District 4-5A title with a 13-0 win over New Iberia Friday night.

The Cougars scored all of their points in the first half and used a stifling defense in the second half to seal the win. St. Thomas More picked off one pass and recovered a pair of New Iberia fumbles.

Thomas Gumpert led the Cougars with 96 yards on 23 carries.

St. Thomas More heads into the playoffs with a 7-3 record and a perfect 4-0 record in district. New Iberia finished the regular season with a 7-3 record and a 1-3 mark in district.

EUNICE 44, CHURCH POINT 0: In Eunice, Trey Caesar scored a pair of touchdowns as Eunice won the District 4-3A title.

Caesar scored on runs of 6 and 19 yards and Stuart Turner threw a 50-yard scoring pass to Tharold Simon and a 48-yard bomb to Demetrius Hebert. Simon also scored on a 36-yard run.

Eunice (6-4) won all five of its district games while Church Point (5-4) finished 1-4 in district.

WESTMINSTER 32, ST. EDMUND 0: In Eunice, Thomas Kemp ran for 199 yards and a touchdown as sixth-ranked Westminster Christian wrapped up the District 5-1A title with the win.

The game was never in doubt as Westminster (8-2, 4-0) put up 25 points in the first half. Wesley Ballard scored on a 5-yard run and Aaron Shamp, who finished with 108 yards on 14 carries, scored on 17 and 6-yard runs as Westminster ran for 385 yards. Kemp’s touchdown came on an 84-yard run.

St. Edmund finished with a 3-6 record overall and 2-2 in district.

OPELOUSAS CATHOLIC 12, PORT BARRE 6: In Port Barre, Nick Gobart scored on a 10-yard run in overtime to give Opelousas Catholic the District 6-2A championship.

Chandler Cart had given Opelousas Catholic (7-3, 5-0) a 6-0 lead with a 6-yard scoring run in the first quarter.

Port Barre (5-5, 2-3) tied the game on a 2-yard run by Clarence Vedell in the third quarter but neither team could score in the final period to force the game into overtime.
