Capitol's speed, defense spark win over U-High

Friday’s game between Capitol High School and University High School wasn’t the senior night University was expecting.

Second-ranked Capitol spoiled the final game played in Jeff Boss Stadium by 17 Cub seniors, using blazing speed and a stingy defense to trounce University 43-6 in a District 7-2A game.

Capitol coach Chadwick Germany said he thought the game was the best-case scenario after suffering its first loss to Central last weekend. With the win, the Lions locked up top honors in 7-2A.

“Yeah, I would say so,” Germany said. “It was just an opportunity to bounce back after a loss and get the kids going in the right direction. I think that’s positive.”

On the other side, senior night couldn’t have been any worse for the Cubs.

The loss puts the Cubs at 4-6 overall and teetering on the edge of the playoffs.

University coach Johnny Shoptaugh said Capitol’s speed and size were too much to overcome.

“They’re a dad-gum good football team,” Shoptaugh said. “Coach Germany does a great job of coaching. They have a good coaching staff. They’re just a step faster than us and a whole lot heavier than us.

“A good big man is going to beat a good little man and that’s pretty much the case tonight.”

Led by quarterback Terrance Broadway, the Lions rolled up 475 yards of total offense. Broadway accounted for 261 of those yards, passing for 168 and rushing for 93. Running back Frankie Jackson ran for 166 yards on 10 carries.

The game was over midway through the second quarter.

Broadway & Co. opened things up with a 44-yard pass and catch from Broadway to Jackson to notch the Lions’ first points on the scoreboard. A two-point pass from Broadway to Johnathan Banks put the score at 8-0 five minutes into the game.

Defensive lineman Devan Dixon pushed in Capitol’s second score of the night Refrigerator Perry-style from a yard out. Devan Stampley’s extra point gave the Lions a 15-point lead with just over nine minutes to go in the second quarter.
