Eleven years have passed since Norman LeJeune and Randall Gay led Brusly football to its most recent district championship.

“How old were ya’ll then?” Brusly coach Tait Dupont asked his players this week.

Welcome to the 39th Sugar Cane Classic, the annual West Baton Rouge championship game featuring the parish’s public schools.

St. James wrapped up its share of the District 8-3A title last week. The Wildcats (3-6, 3-1) will have company after tonight.

One way or the other, a drought will end.

Brusly (6-3, 2-1) is looking to grab a share of its first district title since 1998. Port Allen (5-4, 2-1) is looking to win district honors for the first time since 1974.

And yes, it’s a rivalry game.

To the winner goes the West Baton Rouge championship banner, the Little Brown Jug of the Brusly-Port Allen series.

“This is what high school football is all about,” Dupont said.
