LAFAYETTE — Kaplan High football coach Brent Indest had a frequent response for those who pestering him during the season about Friday game against Notre Dame of Crowley.
“I said if I heard my players, coaches or players’ parents discussing Notre Dame, to go home and not come back. The talk stopped right there,” Indest said.
Indest no longer has to issue that threat.
Fourth-ranked Kaplan (8-1, 4-0) hosts No. 1 Notre Dame (9-0, 4-0) in a long-awaited game that will decide the District 5-3A champion.
Indest and NDHS coach Lewis Cook, Jr., were on opposing sidelines for several years when Indest’s Crowley High Gents and Cook’s Pioneers were crosstown rivals and in the same district.
After all these years, NDHS looks familiar, Indest said.
“They run the same stuff they did when I was at Crowley,” he said. “About the only thing different is (Notre Dame) is passing more. They might pass now whereas they were more inclined to run on similar downs.”
In The Class 5A districts:
-- Seventh-ranked Acadiana (7-2, 2-1) ends the regular season by hosting crosstown rival Lafayette High (3-6, 1-2) in a 3-5A contest tonight.
-- District leader No. 6 Barbe (7-2, 3-0) hosts Sulphur (4-5, 0-3) in another league contest. If Barbe and AHS both win, BHS will be the district champion.
--St. Thomas More (6-3, 3-0) is the 4-5A champion even if the Cougars lose Friday’s night league contest against New Iberia (7-2, 1-2).
6-4A belongs to Northside
Even if No. 5 Northside (7-2, 5-0) loses to St. Martinville (1-8, 1-4) at home Friday night, the Vikings will represent 6-4A as the first-place team.
