Is there any better way to end the high school football regular season than with district showdown that matches two rivals who are also ranked in the top five?
Kenny Guillot of Parkview Baptist and Guy Mistretta of Redemptorist certainly don’t think so.
Third-ranked Parkview (7-1, 3-0) travels to play No. 2 Redemptorist (8-0, 3-0) for a game that will decide the District 7-3A title on Thursday night.
“I just think what we have is really special,” Guillot said. “Sometimes I get a little choked up when I talk about it. Through the years there have been so many great games. And the thing I like about most is this — it’s a playoff atmosphere without the consequences. Regardless of who wins, we both move on to the playoffs.”
The Thursday game between Parkview and Redemptorist helps highlight a Week 10 schedule that includes several other games with key district implications.
Mistretta agrees the rivalry is in some ways a win-win proposition, even though one team will lose.
“We seem to bring out the best in each other,” Mistretta said. “This is the game the guys all talk about, and they want to play in. And I really believe we make each other better.”
The Week 10 schedule features notable games in just about every district.
Fourth-ranked Central (8-1, 5-0) can wrap up the District 5-5A title with a win at Live Oak (4-5, 2-3) Friday. Catholic (7-2, 4-1) is in second and plays at Zachary (3-6, 3-2).
No area team is in the hunt for the 6-5A title. But Dutchtown (6-3, 2-2) plays Ascension Parish rival East Ascension (4-5, 1-3) with an eye on improving its already impressive power rating. St. Amant (5-4, 0-4) hosts Destrehan (4-5, 2-2).
Three teams are tied for the 7-4A lead and two of those teams, St. Michael (6-3, 5-1) and Glen Oaks (6-3, 5-1), meet at BREC’s Olympia Stadium on Friday. Woodlawn (6-3, 5-1) hosts Istrouma (3-6, 3-3).
The 8-3A race also has its share of intrigue with Brusly, Port Allen and St. James vying for the title. Brusly (6-3, 2-1) hosts Port Allen (5-4, 2-1),
while St. James (3-6, 3-1) hosts Edna Karr for a nondistrict game.
