Two athletes from the Baton Rouge metro area, Ascension Catholic’s Charles Caballero and Taurean Nixon of Southern Lab, are among the 20 finalists for Louisiana’s Wendy’s High School Heisman award.
Caballero earned all-state honors in baseball last spring and is the quarterback of the ACHS football team. Nixon, a defensive back and kick return specialist in football, is also SLHS’ student body president.
Another finalist, Malia Cali of Hammond’s St. Thomas Aquinas, is no stranger to local fans. Cali is STA’s record-setting distance runner.
This is the 16th year for the Wendy’s awards. Louisiana’s two winners, one boy and one girl, are scheduled to be announced Nov. 7.
From there, the Louisiana winners go on to compete against the other state winners for the national Wendy’s High School Heisman Award that will be presented Dec. 11 in New York City.
