CROWLEY — The only pass Eunice High School completed Friday night proved the difference as the Bobcats defeated Crowley 13-0 in a key District 4-3A game at cold and rainy Gardiner Memorial Stadium.
A 75-yard first quarter touchdown pass from quarterback Stuart Turner to LSU commitment Tharold Simon got past the Crowley secondary as EHS remained unbeaten in league play.
Eunice coach Paul Trosclair said the play call was a calculated risk on a wet field.
“Crowley was in press coverage, and Simon (6-foot-5) had the height advantage. We just put the ball out there, and he ran under it,” Trosclair said.
Eunice improved to 5-4 and 4-0 in district play. Crowley dropped to 7-2 and 3-1.
The Turner-to-Simon touchdown pass held up for the rest of the half as the Bobcats limited CHS to only 74 total yards in the first two quarters.
Eunice didn’t score again until 8:26 remained in the game when return man Demetrius Hebert ran back a punt 69 yards for the game’s final touchdown.
Trosclair credited his defense for much of the success that Eunice had in stopping CHS quarterback D’Myrus Daniels, who entered the game with 994 passing yards.
Daniels was held to 42 yards in the air on 5-of-13 attempts.
“This was our best defensive effort of the year,” Trosclair said. “We focused on defense this week in practice. Once we got the lead we were able to focus in (on Daniels) even more. I thought then the field conditions began to work in our favor.”
Crowley finished the game with 63 yards rushing, with Daniels getting 42.
CHS coach Tommy Tate said Crowley had opportunities to score, especially in the first half. The Gents moved inside the Eunice 20-yard line twice, but were unable to score.
“Eunice was able to score on two big plays, and we didn’t take advantage of the chances we had,” Tate said. “I think in the first half if we could have scored and broken the ice, things could have been different.”
