Amite rallies for victory over Independence

INDEPENDENCE — Joseph Mason threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Hart — in the back right corner of the end zone — with 22 seconds remaining to lift Amite to a 14-10 victory over Independence in a District 9-3A showdown Thursday.
Amite, ranked eighth in Class 3A, got both of its touchdowns as the lead changed hands three times in the fourth quarter.
First, Tywond McGee scored on an 8-yard run for a 7-3 lead. Then, Independence, ranked fourth in 3A, took a 10-7 lead on Desmond Copeland’s 4-yard run. Then, Mason and Hart hooked up for the game-winner.
Amite (7-2, 4-0 in 9-3A) had 240 yards (126 rushing) but lost three fumbles, while Independence (7-2, 3-1) had 229 rushing yards and 14 passing yards.
NOTRE DAME 21, NORTH VERMILION 0: In Crowley, Stu Cook ran for two touchdowns and Notre Dame held North Vermilion to 72 yards in the top-ranked
Pioneers’ District 5-3A victory.
Cook scored from 10 yards out with 9:10 left in the first quarter and from 13 yards
out at the end of the third quarter. Zack D’Aquin scored on a 40-yard catch from Ryan Leonards in the second quarter.
Notre Dame (9-0, 4-0 in 5-3A), ranked No. 1 in 3A, held North Vermilion (5-4, 2-2) to 67 rushing yards on 37 carries. Meanwhile, the Pioneers ran for 151 yards, with Leonards passing for 140.
FALSE RIVER ACADEMY 40, ASCENSION CHRISTIAN 14: In Gonzales, Brad Guillory ran for four touchdowns — 32, 1, 4 and 14 yards — and threw for another — a 35-yard pass to Austin Brooks — to lead FRA (2-7) over Ascension Christian (0-3).
Matt Hadley had a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, as Ascension Christian took an 8-7 lead, and Corion Davis scored a touchdown on an 82-yard fumble return in the fourth.
Guillory finished with 119 yards on 14 carries. FRA’s Brock Rockforte also added a 4-yard TD run.
OPELOUSAS CATHOLIC 24, JEANERETTE 0: In Opelousas, Jalen Edwards scored on a 53-yard interception and Dorian Durald caught a 75-yard touchdown pass to lead Opelousas Catholic to a pivotal District 6-2A victory.
