LAFAYETTE — A 1-4 start didn’t send the Eunice High coaching staff into a panic.
Instead the Bobcats’ coaching staff turned to the past and convinced their players to envision the future, said Eunice coach Paul Trosclair.
“We’ve been 1-4 before (in 2006) and then we won seven in a row,” Trosclair said. “This is a staff that has been together for awhile now, and we told the team that despite the record, we were being presented a chance to win the district.
“That has been our goal and the players have bought into it.”
Eunice, 4-4 and 3-0 in District 4-3A, meets No. 10 Crowley (7-1, 3-0) on Friday night in a game at Crowley’s Gardiner Memorial Stadium that will probably decide the league champion.
Trosclair said he’s impressed with the job Crowley has done this season under coach Tommy Tate, who recruited EHS when Tate was an assistant and later a head coach at McNeese State.
“They (the Gents) have come a long way,” said Trosclair. “It’s good to see, because Crowley is a football town. I know (Tate) has made some changes in his staff and you can see the difference.”
Key game in District 5-3A
The title race in this district is tight, with top-ranked Notre Dame (8-0, 3-0), hosting North Vermilion (6-2, 2-1) tonight in Crowley.
In another key 5-3A game tonight, No. 6 Kaplan (7-1, 3-0) is at Abbeville (1-7, 1-2).
Victories by NDHS and Kaplan will set up a Week 10 title showdown when Notre Dame visits Kaplan.
Not so sure about 4-5A
The 23-6 win last Thursday night by St. Thomas More (5-3, 2-0) over Westgate (5-3, 2-1) in New Iberia, should have helped pave the way for a league title by St. Thomas More.
