Lab rolls past Clinton
The 10th-ranked Class 1A Southern Lab Kittens offset a 220 yards to 319 yards deficit by picking off four Clinton passes and recovering two fumbles to run its record to 6-2 with a 34-19 victory in a nondistrict game Friday night.
Clinton scored first on Timothy Scott’s 40-yard run, but Southern Lab countered with three TD passes from Brandon Patin. His first scoring pass covered 8 yards to Terrance White. Cardell Brown took in the other two, the first 14 yards and the second covering 10 yards for a 20-13 halftime lead. Patin finished 13-of-21 passes for 160 yards.
Lab extended its lead on 2-yard TD runs by Delvin Welch and Alondre Young.
Clinton’s final score was a 21-yard pass from Kendall Beckwith to Craig Betrece.
AMITE 50, ALBANY 7: The ninth-ranked Amite Warriors used one interception and recovered three Albany fumbles to set up numerous short-field drives in a win at Albany.
After Albany scored early in the first quarter, six different Amite players scored seven touchdowns to run the Warriors’ overall record to 6-2 to remained in first place in District 9-3A at 3-0.
Albany (5-3, 1-1) was limited to 121 total yards, while Amite ran for 188 and passed for another 98 yards.
James Odom ran for scores covering 3 and 24 yards for the Warriors. Scoring runs came from Joe Mason (2 yards), Lavanta Frazier (20 yards) in Amite’s 29-7 halftime lead. Mason passed 17 yards to Thomas Hart and 18 yards to Darian Henderson, and Anthony Smith returned a fumble 15 yards to complete Amite’s scoring.
DENHAM SPRINGS 35, ST. MARTINVILLE 7: In St. Martinville, Denham Springs’ offense rolled to a 21-0 halftime lead and finished off the victory by limiting St. Martinville to 55 yards.
Five different Jackets scored: Jazz Mitchell on a 2-yard run, Josh Miley’s 3-yard run and a 40-yard pass from Tanner Wells to Dustin Garig came in the first half.
St. Martinville’s lone score came on a 71-yard interception return by Jamar Valerie before Wells hit Brian Garret for a 16-yard score and Romel Williams gave Denham its final TD on an 8-yard run.
Blaine Dupree added five PATs for Denham Springs, now 6-2 for the season.
BAKER, 12, NORTHEAST 6: In Baker, the Buffs overcame four turnovers with a balanced offensive attack — 135 rushing and 174 passing yards — in the District 7-3A win.
Randy Petty broke a 6-all tie with a 1-yard fourth-quarter run. A 14-yard Petty-to-Carson Barton pass in the first quarter got the Buffaloes on the scoreboard.
Northeast tied the score on Jarvis Houston’s 25-yard TD pass to Demascus Jackson in the third quarter. All three PATs failed.
Bo Rogers led Baker with 30 carries for 120 yards while Petty hit 8 of 11 passes for 174 yards, some 70 of them going to Lionel LeDuff.
EPISCOPAL 58, POINTE COUPEE CENTRAL 14: Episcopal rolled to its first District 7-2A win this season with a punishing ground attack.
The Knights (5-3, 1-3), led by Jared Rogers’s 13 carries for 115 yards and three TDs, ran 42 times for 391 yards. Most of the damage came in the first half. EHS was up 46-8 at half.
Tommy Richey added 9 carries for 97 yards and two scores with Mike Henry running five times for 66 yards and another TD for the winners. Vince Dellocono’s 40-yard TD pass to J.T. Sides got EHS on the board first, and Mike Williams added another TD on a 65-yard punt return.
JACKSON 23, KENTWOOD 0: In Jackson, Jackson posted its first win of the season in eight tries and evened its District 6-1A record at 1-1 in the dominating victory.
The Chiefs rolled up 174 yards rushing and added 132 passing, while the defense limited Kentwood (3-5, 1-2) to 38 total yards.
Ellie Eubanks opened the scoring with a 3-yard run in the first quarter, and Demontrell Lee added a 32-yard field goal for a 10-0 halftime lead. Corey Hawkins’ 58-yard run and Christopher Matthews’ 1-yard run completed the scoring.
EAST IBERVILLE 26, CHRISTIAN LIFE 22: In St. Gabriel, Brian James hooked up with receiver Mitch Johnson for touchdown passes covering 85 and 35 yards to lead EIHS to its first District 8-1A win in three tries.
Johnson also ran seven yards with an intercepted pass for anther score.
CLA battled back from a EIHS’ 14-7 halftime lead for a 22-20 fourth-quarter lead, but the latter James-to-Johnson pass accounted for the game-winning points. James hit Mick Brooks with a 16-yard pass to open the scoring.
CLA outgained East Iberville 354 yards to 243, but had one pass intercepted and lost two fumbles. Kevin Wright passed for TDs covering 11 yards to Steven Whisnant and 20 yards to Frank Bartley, and added a rushing TD and a safety to hold the slim lead before James-to-Johnson sent CLA’s record to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in district.
WEST ST. JOHN 29, WHITE CASTLE 23: In White Castle, Kenny Dabney carried 23 times for 119 yards and two 5-yard TDs to lead ninth-ranked West St. John to its third District 8-1A win without a loss and a 5-3 record.
Ronald Martin hooked up on a 15-yard scoring pass to Demarius Zachary and an 85-yard strike to Terrance Taylor to get White Castle (3-4, 1-2) close on its home field.
Xavier Pierce’s scoring runs of 1 and 5 yards capped WSJ’s scoring.
HAHNVILLE 41, DUTCHTOWN 7: In Hahnville, Alfred Blue ran for three touchdowns and Brian Ensminger threw for two TDs as Hahnville, the third-ranked team in Class 5A, scored 27 points in the second half to pull away from Dutchtown in District 6-5A.
Blue scored on runs of 2, 1 and 4 yards. Ensminger threw a 13-yard TD pass to Byron Gauthier and a 21-yard strike to James Butler.
Dutchtown’s score came on a 68-yard run by Johnathon Darville.
