Dutchtown moves on with win

NEW ORLEANS — Dutchtown fell into an early hole before erupting for five runs in the second inning on the way to a second-round 6-3 victory over Brother Martin to put the Griffins into the Class 5A state tournament beginning Friday in Denham Springs.
Dutchtown (23-15) surrendered a pair of runs in the Brother Martin first but bounced back to take the lead for good in the second.
Justin Denoux and Dillon Day drove in runs, and Denoux produced three of the Griffins’ 11 hits.
Dutchtown pitcher Donnie White shrugged off the first-inning damage to record a complete-game three-hitter with eight strikeouts.
PONCHATOULA 5, EAST ASCENSION 4: In Ponchatoula, the Green Wave did most of its damage with a four-run second inning, and Ponchatoula pitcher Torin Lucas took it from there in a second-round victory.
Ponchatoula plays Barbe, a 3-0 winner over Hahnville, at 1 p.m. Friday in the Class 5A state tournament.
Lucas improved to 12-0 this season by scattering five Gators hits, three off the bat of Dustin Wambsgans.
East Ascension (26-11) cut the Wave’s lead to 4-2 and pulled within a run with a single run in the sixth. But Lucas slammed the door in the seventh.
Dylan Hills and Laramie Pittman produced two hits each for the Wave, and Pittman chased in a pair of runs.
CENTRAL PRIVATE 4, COPIAH ACADEMY 3: In Baker, it took a while for the Central Private bats to come alive Monday night, but it couldn’t have happened at a better time for the Rebels.
In search of a fourth consecutive Class AA state championship, CPS didn’t dent the scoreboard for three innings against Copiah Academy
But the Rebels’ bats warmed up for a 4-3 triumph in the opening game of a best-of-three series.
