DUTCHTOWN — The Dutchtown High Griffins swept both boys and girls competitions for the second consecutive week to highlight action Friday night at the Dutchtown Invitational track meet.
The Griffins took team titles at Episcopal’s four-way meet last week, but this time overcame 15 teams while playing host at their own meet.
“The competition was a lot stiffer,” said Dutchtown girls coach Bill Jones, who wasn’t happy with his team’s performance despite the win.
“We have a lot of work to do. Winning the meet was like turning a negative into a positive.”
The Lady Griffins trailed Hahnville after 15 events but rallied to take team honors with 133 points. Hahnville finished second at 119, while Baton Rouge High (86) and St. Joseph’s Academy (71) were the next closest pursuers.
For the boys, Dutchtown cruised to the team win with 102 points, easily enough to outdistance St. Amant (73), Hahnville (64.5) and Lutcher (53.5).
Lutcher’s Frederick Thomas scored 22 1/2 points, and was named the outstanding track performer with wins in the 400 (49.10) and the 200 (21.83).
Hahnville’s Da’Mon Scott didn’t win a field event, but tallied 22 points for top honors after finishing second in the long jump and the high jump and third in the triple jump.
Ta’Neisha Steib, also of Hahnville, had similar success in girls field events, scoring 16 points. Steib placed second in the triple jump and the long jump.
Episcopal’s Abby TerHaar was named outstanding girls track athlete on the heels of wins in the 1,600 (5:28.41) and the 3,200 (12:10.93).
TerHaar’s win in the 1,600 was three seconds faster than her winning time at last week’s four-way meet, and the 3,200 win featured an improvement of 10 seconds.
Hahnville led Dutchtown 111-107, but the Griffins used a 1-2 finish in the 200 to take the lead. Freshman Ka’Neisha Cobbins finished ahead of teammate Christine Conner with a time of 25.34.
Dutchtown wrapped up the team title with a second-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay.
