The Mississippi River is at an 83-year high. Water in the marshes is high on southeast and south winds, then the bottom drops out when north winds usher in cold fronts. Then rain brings dirty water, which gets more cloudy no matter which way fall’s stronger winds blow. What’s a fisherman to do? We ought to be in prime time for sac-a-lait. High, muddy water across most of south Louisiana nixes that. With the exception of False River, scattered spots like Lake Verret (when it’s not chopped by winds), the marshes south of U.S. 90 and ponds, bass fishermen are fighting the same predicament.
