On a day when Louisiana should be at its celebratory best, it’s difficult for offshore fishermen to be overjoyed.
Word from the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council meeting in Mobile, Ala., last week is that recreational red snapper fishermen will have a shorter season this year.
How much shorter?
We don’t know yet, but charterboat skipper Daryl Carpenter said he left Wednesday’s session with the feeling that the GMFMC will vote on something between a 51-to-60-day season. The daily limit of two red snapper 16 inches long or longer will hold.
A June 1 opener is a lock, too, and depending on the length of the season, there might not be a red snapper category for the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo.
Think the best thing today is to hold comment until my blood pressure comes down. Afraid I might write something that might offend some federal bureaucrat, something that might make them think their job isn’t the most important in the world. Heaven forbid that anyone could challenge their authority. Know what I mean?
First impression? A 51-day season is an insult.
Some good news
Thursday’s Wildlife and Fisheries Commission meeting brought a ray of hope to some of the state’s most frustrated deer hunters.
For the past several years, Area 6 deer hunters have noticed whitetails are rutting later in the season. Years ago, most Area 6 hunters knew the first rutting period came sometime in the last 15 days in December.
Recent studies showed the peak of the rut in some Area 6 places is around Jan. 15, a date that leaves very little time to hunt whitetails with modern firearms.
David Moreland, the former chief in the state’s Wildlife Division and State Deer Study leader, told the commission hunters in Iberville, West Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee told him about this shift. He confirmed those reports.
“It is common to find bucks with antlers well into March,” Moreland said.
