2009-10 Migratory Waterfowl Seasons

2009-2010 season and bag limits for ducks and geese approved Thursday by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission:

DUCKS (60 days)

West Zone: Nov. 14-Dec. 6; Dec. 19-Jan. 24. Youth weekend, Nov. 7-8.

East Zone: Nov. 21-Dec. 6; Dec. 19-Jan. 31. Youth weekend, Nov. 14-15.

Daily limit is 6. Possession limit is 12 after opening days of all splits. The daily bag limit can include no more than four mallards, of which only two can be mallard hens, 3 wood ducks, 2 redhead ducks, 2 scaup (dos gris), 1 mottled duck, 1 pintail, 1 canvasback and 1 black duck.

MERGANSERS-COOTS

Same dates as duck season. Merganser daily limit is 5, of which only 2 can be hooded mergansers. Coots (poule d’eau) daily limit is 15. Possession limit is twice the daily limit after opening days of all splits. The take of these species is “in addition” to the daily duck limit.

GEESE (72 days)

East Zone: Nov. 9-Dec. 6, Dec. 19-Jan. 31

West Zone: Nov. 14-Dec. 6 and Dec. 19-Feb. 5.

Daily limit on specklebelly geese is 2 with a possession limit of 4 after opening days of all splits. Daily limit on blue, snow and Ross’ geese is 20 with no possession limit.

CANADA GOOSE

Dec. 19-Jan. 31, statewide except closed in portions of Vermilion and Cameron parishes.

Daily limit is 1. During the open Canada goose season, hunters are allowed to take 2 specklebelly geese or 1 specklebelly and 1 Canada goose. (There will be no special state $5 permit to hunt Canada geese).

CONSERVATION ORDER

Take of blue, snow and Ross’ geese only.

West Zone: Dec. 7-18, Feb. 6-March 14.

East Zone: Dec. 7-18, Feb. 1-March 14.

There are no daily nor possession limits. Hunters allowed to use electronic calls and use shotguns capable of holding more than three shells in extended hunting hours.

RAILS AND GALLINULES

Statewide: Sept. 12-27, Nov. 14-Jan. 6 (70 days)

Daily limit for king & clapper rails is 15 in the aggregate of the two species. Possession limit is 30 after opening days of the two splits. Daily and possession limit on sora and Virginia rails is 25 in the aggregate of the two species.

Daily limit on gallinules is 15. Possession limit is 30 after the opening days of the two splits.
