For the first time in the history of fisheries management off the Louisiana coast, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission voted to reject state adherence to federal mandates for regulating recreational and commercial catches in state waters. BELLE RIVER — Water, water everywhere and fish were hard to catch — except for Mark Smith and a handful of other anglers gathered at the Belle River Public Launch for Thursday’s first round of the Bassmaster Central Open. Months ago, when the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society announced the Atchafalaya Basin was on the Central Open schedule, many south Louisiana bass fishermen expected the early November date to be a swamp-fishing showcase. For the first time in a month, the weekend comes without rain — but with lots of east and southeast wind. |
