PORT FOURCHON — All’s well that starts and ends well. For Myron Hall, the three days he spent on the Gulf of Mexico went more than well, from Thursday’s start of the 62nd annual Golden Meadow-Fourchon Tarpon Rodeo to its end Saturday at Moran’s Marina.


GRAND ISLE — The smiles on the faces of a dozen Department of Wildlife and Fisheries marine biologists were easy to see last week. They looked like kids with pockets filled with coins and turned loose in a candy story.


Hasn’t this thing with Elmer’s Island gone long enough? The headstrong folks who’ve run our state through the three administrations have run headlong into a headstrong landowner and we’re paying the price.


Dove and teal hunters across Louisiana will have the most liberal seasons allowed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for September hunts. The 70-day dove and the 16-day special teal seasons dates were proposed by the state’s Wildlife Division and approved by the Wildlife and Fisheries Commission during Thursday’s meeting in Baton Rouge.

PORT FOURCHON — Some of the fireworks going off in this south Louisiana port and fishing community weren’t saved to celebrate the Fourth of July.


The attorney for the owner of Elmer’s Island has protested the state’s move to open the island’s beaches to vehicular access today for the Fourth of July holiday weekend and subsequent weekends.


Increased boating safety enforcement, changes in the 2010 spring turkey season, dates for the early migratory bird seasons and the use of deer to hunt dogs on Kisatchie National Forest lands dominated Thursday’s Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission meeting.


A day after announcing the sportsmen of the state would have road access to Elmer’s Island for the first time since 2001, Department of Wildlife and Fisheries secretary RobertBarham said Wednesday that the island will be open every weekend “until further notice.”


Constant southwest winds have turned out to be a not-so-bad problem along the coast, especially if you’re working the reefs and rigs on the east side of the Mississippi River.

GRAND ISLE — State agency brass and state and local elected officials turned out Tuesday for ribbon-cutting ceremonies for Louisiana’s $23 million Fisheries Research Lab.


GRAND ISLE — Sport fishermen ruled the day Tuesday when Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries secretary Robert Barham announced the public would have road access to Elmer’s Island for the first time in nearly eight years.


Elmer's Island will be open for fishing and outdoor recreation activities beginning a half-hour before sunrise Friday and running through Sunday.
