LSU volleyball wins SEC West title

OXFORD, Miss. — Sam Dabbs had 39 assists and sparked the No. 19 LSU volleyball team to a season-best .416 hitting percentage as the Tigers claimed their fifth straight SEC Western Division crown with a 3-0 victory over Ole Miss (25-16, 25-18, 29-27) Friday at the Gillom Sports Center.

LSU (19-5, 13-2 SEC) has won 12 of its last 13 matches highlighted by nine sweeps. The Tigers also pushed their winning streak to 27 straight victories over SEC Western Division opponents.

Marina Skender had 17 kills on a season-high .556 hitting percentage and added 11 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. Brittnee Cooper had 12 kills and four blocks.

LSU continues its four-match road swing Sunday at Arkansas. First serve is set for 1 p.m., and the match will be televised on CST.

Women’s tennis

LSU COMPLETES DAY 1 OF HARVARD INVITATIONAL: In Cambridge, Mass., the LSU women’s tennis team completed day one of the Harvard Invitational hosted by Harvard at the Beren Tennis Center in Cambridge, Mass.

The Lady Tigers had strong performances from all three women participating Friday. Sophomore Whitney Wolf blanked Julie Flanzer of Brown University 6-0, 6-0. Kaitlin Burns defeated Cate Stewart of Brown 6-3, 6-3. Senior Nicole Kantor took both sets to the wire against Christine Ordway of Cornell but came up just short, 7-5, 7-6(5).

Ebie Wilson and Sloane Mathis defeated opponents by scores of 7-5, 6-3 and 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 respectively. Kylie Adamek fell to Sarah O’Neal of Cornell 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles play, the Lady Tigers participated in three matches, winning two of them.

The team of Wolf/Kantor defeated Harvard’s Tachibana/Lehman, and the LSU team of Burns/Wilson defeated Cornell’s Sanchez/Lim. LSU’s Adamek/Mathis fell to Cornell’s Ordway and Seyburn.

The Lady Tigers will be back in action today with doubles play starting at 8 a.m. followed by singles at 11 a.m.

Swimming and diving

ALABAMA DEFEATS LSU: In Tuscaloosa, Ala., LSU’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams earned seven wins apiece and swept the relays against Alabama Friday, but the Crimson Tide came away victorious in both dual meets at the Alabama Aquatic Center.
