LeMahieu signs with Cubs
LSU second baseman DJ LeMahieu, who was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the second round of the First-Year Player Draft last month, has signed his first professional contract.
The Cubs announced Saturday that LeMahieu, the 79th overall pick of the draft, has signed his contract and was assigned to their Rookie League team in Mesa, Ariz. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
When he’s ready, LeMahieu, who celebrated his 21st birthday on July 13, will be sent to the Cubs’ Class A team in Boise, Idaho.
LeMahieu led the Tigers, who won the College World Series title on June 24, in hitting as a sophomore this season with a .350 average.
He also topped the team in hits (96) and multi-hit games (30). He scored 57 runs and had 13 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 43 RBIs.
LeMahieu’s clutch two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth inning in Game 1 of the CWS Championship Series against Texas tied the game at 6-6. The Tigers went on to a 7-6 win in 11 innings.
He hit .444 in six CWS games with 12 hits in 27 at-bats. He also scored nine runs and drove in four.
