Tennis players earn sportsmanship awards
LSU tennis players Kevin Dessauer and Staten Spencer both received sportsmanship honors Saturday.
Senior Kevin Dessauer of the 18th-ranked LSU men’s tennis team was named the Southeast Regional ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship winner.
Spencer a Lady Tiger junior, received the Southwest Regional ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship.
This is the second straight year a Tiger has won the award as current student assistant coach Danny Bryan won the award last season.
The ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship goes to a player who has exhibited sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
Dessauer is set to graduate with a 4.00 grade point average and a major in kinesiology.
The Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship goes to a women’s player who has enhanced her team’s performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis.
Spencer 3.946 gpa in economics and graduates this spring.
Spencer is the only LSU women’s tennis player to be recognized as an ITA Scholar-Athlete three consecutive seasons in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Because of her efforts in the classroom, Spencer has been nominated for the prestigious Rhodes scholarship by an LSU professor.
This season, Spencer was named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team after her work with LSU’s CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success/Life Skills Program.
