LSU BASEBALL BLOG

8:20 p.m. -- Missed opportunities

OMAHA, Neb. -- Ryan Schimpf led off the bottom of the third inning against new UNC pitcher Colin Bates and walked on five pitches. Michael Hollander fouled off the next pitch with Schimpf breaking for second base on the hit-and-run. He indicated he might bunt on the next pitch, but it was and inside and forced him to duck.

Hollander did bunt on the next pitch, but the plan for a sacrifice didn't work. Schimpf was forced out at second base because the ball got back to Bates too quickly to be an effective sacrifice. Hollander was on first with one out for Jared Mitchell. Bates threw over to first repeatedly and got ahead of Mitchell 0-2, then watched as Mitchell's excuse-me swing produced a plodding ground ball to shortstop that ate up Ryan Graepel and put runners on first and second.

E-6.

Blake Dean came to bat with an RBI opportunity and hit a fly to left field for the second out. Hollander was doubled off second base, ending the inning.

LSU still trails 2-1. We're going to the fourth inning. Jared Bradford is still LSU's pitcher.
