AUBURN, Ala. -- LSU's 15-game winning streak is its longest since the 1997 team opened the season with a 19-game winning streak.
The 1986 team owns the second-longest streak in LSU history, 18 games early in that season. The current 15-game streak is tied for third-longest with that of the 1995 team, which won 15 consecutive games early in that season.
Last night, LSU won its first SEC West championship since 2005. Other history is on the line today.
If LSU defeats Auburn again this afternoon, it would mark the first time an LSU team swept four consecutive three-game SEC series. In 1991, the last time LSU had an 11-game SEC winning streak (equal to the current streak), one of three games in the Mississippi State series was rained out and never played.
LSU can set a school record today by winning 12 consecutive SEC games in one season.
LSU opened its 1991 SEC schedule with that two-game sweep of Mississippi State, then swept three-game series against Ole Miss, Auburn and Florida. Tennessee ended the streak, winning the first two games of the next series.
The LSU streak ended at 11, but dating to the 1990 season, the program had a 15-game regular-season SEC winning streak. The 1990 team won its last four regular-season SEC games, including the last game of the Vanderbilt series and a sweep of Georgia.
LSU, over two seasons, had five consecutive SEC sweeps, including the two-game sweep of Mississippi State, and a 15-game regular-season SEC winning streak. Games not counted during that span were 1990 SEC tournament games, a win against Mississippi State in the ABCA Hall of Fame Tournament to start the 1991 season and a win against Florida in the Busch Challenge before conference play began. For our purposes, we're talking about regular-season SEC games, which is the way the SEC office counts it in its record book.
South Carolina holds the record for most consecutive SEC victories in one season with 16 in 2000. Tennessee is second with 15 consecutive SEC wins in 1951.
Alabama won 19 consecutive SEC games over two seasons, winning its last 10 in 1941 and its first nine in 1942. LSU's streak of 15 (the last four in 1990 and the first 11 in 1991) is next on the list.
Oh, and LSU's streak of games played -- and victories -- in sunflower-gold jerseys is at nine games and counting. The 15-game winning streak is tied for the longest current streak in Division I college baseball. Jacksonville (Ala.) State swept a doubleheader Friday against UT-Martin, bringing the Gamecocks' streak to 15 games. Those two teams will play an afternoon game today in Martin, Tenn.
