AUBURN, Ala. -- The LSU-Auburn game Saturday ends the regular season for LSU and the season overall for Auburn, which will not qualify for the SEC tournament. The game, scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, will not be televised.
The reason? The SEC has a contract with Fox Sports Net for an SEC-TV Game of the Week on Saturdays, and other SEC games cannot be televised that day unless they begin at noon CDT or earlier or 6 p.m. CDT or later to avoid competing with the SEC-TV Game of the Week.
The SEC-TV Game of the Week is a 3 p.m. CDT start on Saturdays.
Kentucky agreed months ago to a noon CDT start when LSU played a Saturday game in Lexington, but Auburn would not agree to do the same for tomorrow's game, said Ronnie Rantz of the Jumbo Sports Network, which is producing tonight's telecast on Cox Sports Television.
The Saturday at Kentucky turned into a doubleheader day, and LSU was on television in Baton Rouge and other CST markets because of the special circumstances created by an unforseeable Friday night rainout. Because the LSU-Kentucky games were not live on CSS, which competes with most of the live Fox Sports Net Southeast markets that show the SEC-TV game of the week, there was no outcry when LSU's doubleheader at Kentucky had limited live TV coverage.
The SEC contract with Fox Sports Net precludes LSU and other schools from scheduling head-to-head against the SEC-TV Game of the Week, but under the special circumstances that weekend, the second game of the Saturday doubleheader between LSU and Kentucky aired live without complaint.
Tomorrow's matchup for the final SEC-TV Game of the Week is Arkansas at Mississippi State. The first 15 minutes of the telecast will feature a live on-field tribute to retiring Mississippi State coach Ron Polk.
Tennessee at South Carolina is another historic game tomorrow, the last game at Sarge Frye Field in Columbia, S.C.
3:15 update: Some of you may see an LSU-Auburn baseball telecast scheduled for noon Saturday on CSS. That will be a tape-delayed version of tonight's game, Auburn officials told me.
Some CSS markets today televised a tape-delayed replay of last night's LSU-Auburn game, I'm told.
So, despite what you might read somewhere else, including the SEC's Web site, tomorrow's game is at 2 p.m. CDT (not noon) and will not be televised.
Hope this helps clear up some confusion that was brought to my attention a few minutes ago.
